You may be asking yourself, “Why would I start a vegetable garden?”
With all the grocery stores available to you these days, what is the point of growing your own food? Is it worth the effort of getting dirty and sweaty? You may be asking yourself, will I even succeed at growing anything? Some of my reasons are below. Yes, it is worth it and yes you will succeed, with me helping you along the way!

Taste and Quality:

For me the answer is simple and obvious, quality and flavor! I can grow a fresh, juicy, delicious, organic tomato with very little effort. After growing up with fresh tomatoes and growing them every year myself I truly can’t stand the flavor or texture of store bought tomatoes. Blech! Everything I grow tastes better than what I buy! I might be able to find organic veggies at Kroger or Publix but the taste is always lacking! I do love to support local farmers when I don’t grow something myself, their produce is fresh and tasty unlike grocery store produce.

Savings:

With a family of six, saving money is a necessity! I save so much money growing our own organic vegetables! Buying Seeds (<<<click here to learn more) and a few starter plants is way cheaper for the amount of food I get from one seed or plant. One tomato seed turns into countless tomato sandwiches. Sometimes we have so much extra we can barter or sell to friends and neighbors. We preserve our harvest that we don’t eat fresh off the vine, and have yummy veggies year round. I dehydrate, can, ferment, and freeze just about anything. Our pantry is never empty!

Variety:

We also get so many choices on which varieties of veggies we eat! The varieties of vegetables we grow is so diverse, from asparagus to zucchini.  By choosing your own seed from catalogs, we get to have purple carrots and yellow tomatoes. Have you ever tasted them? So yummy! Heritage and Heirloom varieties are hardly ever offered in grocery stores but my garden is full of them. Seed and plant choices are unending! Every year I grow something new.

Health:

One of the biggest motivators to grow my own is to have organic, pesticide free food for my family! We don’t have to worry about washing our tomatoes, we eat them right off the vine, still warm from the sun…mmm! No GMO or chemical contamination in our diet. We care about our health and that of the environment. The vegetables are not sprayed with preservatives for long distance travel. They are not picked before ripe for longer storage and they are not wasting fossil fuels being trucked in from Mexico! Growing organic, eating local and in season helps us and the natural resources we rely on. I’m doing my part to save the planet, are you!? 😉
